BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS 1

Illustrating a schoolbook.

The instructions from Holland are;
Make by the following script the illustrations you think it's important.
The story is going about 5 children from different nationalities.
They live on different places on an island, all in a small village.
They are a group who playing together and do different things.
Together they make some interesting adventures.

I made the decision to make 3 different sizes of illustrations.
One full page A5 21 X 15 cm , a half page 10 1/2 X 15 cm and illustrations of 4 X 5 cm.
I will make about 26 illustrations.
See the next pages how a book is growing by these illustrations.

Illustration 1
Today I make the first setup on
Schoellershammer paper.
The size of this illustration will
be 10 1/2 X 15 cm.
The most imported thing is to
make and find the characters.
First I do some sketches on
small pieces of paper till I find
the right composition.
First of all the thin pencil lines
of each character.
With pen & ink I draw the
first thin lines.
These will be the guidelines
of my drawing to fill in.
This will be done with color
pencils and pastels.
I'm working over and over with
combination of color pencil.
So I get the right faces and
characters.
I will make some small
adjustments later.
I decided to do that when all
drawings are ready.
It's easier when you have all the
illustrations in front of you.
5 kids sitting in a bus.
The characters are made.
The beginning is there.
Illustration 2
This will be a big
illustration 21X 15 cm.
I will show the
situation where the
kids are living.
I make my first setup
in thin pencil lines.
It's important, these
are your guidelines!
After that I make the
pen & ink lines.
Today I finish the
illustration.
The village is created.
Now we know how and
where they are living.
The colors are made
with pastels
and color pencils.

Illustration 3

This will be a new small illustration
with simple lines and a few details.

I colored the illustration and made some small
adjustments.
Later I have to work more on that kid in front but
for now I leave it alone.
It's better to make the last adjustments at the
end of the session.

Illustration 4

A new illustration and a new
character.
An older person who you will
see often.
The kids are together.
Again I make the first important
lines.

I cannot decide exactly what
the background will be.
That's for later.
No problem, that's always nice
with illustrating.
The ideas coming with the time
you are drawing and working
on it.

The final illustration.
By drawing the children
I got the idea to put
them together on a porch.
Finaly it gives the illustration
a "family" look.

Illustration 5

This small illustration is the size of 4 X 5 cm
Music! No problem.

With bright colors and drums and some notes
we have a small but nice illustration

Illustration 6

The kids, walking in the nature.
This first setup is made in pencil
to get the right composition.

Stage 2
I made the lines with pen and
ink to get everything on the
right place.
I add the other children and
trees.

The final illustration.
I bring the colors on paper.
First of all the pastel colors for
the large parts.
The color pencil for the
small parts and finally with
pen & ink the finishing touch.

Illustration 7

Again a small illustration.
Two girls are eating.
It's the first setup.

Making with pen and ink the
final setup.

Colored by pencil and
finished with pen and ink.

Illustration 8

Girl sitting with a small dog
(Pekinese) under a divi divi tree.
First setup with pencil lines.

I add more details and
guidelines for the final
illustration with pen & ink.

The stage where I put the
pastel color as underground
on paper.
These colors will be
important by the time I
finish the illustration.
The final illustration
It's a big full page drawing with bright colors.
You can see the girl's sadness in a typical
Antillean landscape.

Illustration 9

The small dog sitting with one of
the boys in the car.
Again the first lines in pencil.

These lines worked out in
pen & ink.

The final illustration.
It's a small illustration to place
between the text.

Illustration 10

Here the complete setup
of an illustration.
The boy and an older man
talking about the dog
swimming.
First the pencil lines.
These will be our guidelines.

This is stage two.
Here I made the
important lines with
pen and ink.

Stage three.
Applying the large areas
in pastel.
I will make the
background later.

Stage four.
After the pastel I begin with
the faces and give them their
personality.
Later I make the clothes
in color pencil.

Stage five.
I apply all the colors with color
pencil and make the dark parts
and depth with different colors.

Stage six and the final
stage.
Working with pen and ink,
I made the adjustments,
depth and details.
